Finding Out Who Invented The Sash Window Is Expectedly Not Possible

Who invented the sash window? That is a good question. Originally they were believed to have been invented in the late 17th century in Holland. More recent research indicates that they may have been invented in England earlier than the 17th century. Another suggestion is that it was Britain who invented them during the mid 1600′s.

We will probably never know the real truth about their origination. In 1519 W. Horman wrote Vulgaria where windows with ‘levys going up and down’ were described. That tells us that they were created before the 1600′s but we still don’t know who the true inventors were. They were displayed in 1676 and 1685 in Chatsworth and Whitehall.

There is evidence that these windows were being used in Europe as far back as the 13th century. Improved window designs began to come to England from France at the time of the French Revolution. The word ‘sash’ derived from the French word ‘chassis’ meaning frame.

The first weighted and balanced windows were thought to have been invented in England. These windows definitely fit in England with the wet, mild weather there. They will not rot as easily as other windows and the fact that you can open them slightly works in those moist conditions.

They became popular throughout Britain’s upper class homes. Eighteenth century installations are currently still in use. The ability to move both frames happened in the Georgian era. It was also during this period that the idea of six panes became common and could be seen in many homes.

During the Victorian era these windows became an integral part of a building’s design. The craftsmanship of those times was impeccable. Sash windows have survived 250 years. They are slowly on the decline in England though due to the cost of producing them. The new plastic windows are cheaper but will need to be replaced every 20 years or so. During their peak a sash window would only need the cord replaced after twenty years.

While the answer to the question of who invented the sash window may never be clear we do know that those windows are a wonderful addition to your home. They give it a touch of class as was known in the Victorian, Edwardian and Georgian periods. Their classic style will not go out of style. Even with the plastic windows they still try to make them look like the original sash style.
