Some Home Remedies For Insect Bites

When I was a little kid, I loved running barefoot through soft spring grass. That is, until I stepped on a bee this one time. After that, I was less thrilled with being barefoot all the time.

That sting was horrible, like stepping on a piece of glass. My mom pulled out as much venom as she could, by applying a paste of baking soda and water to the sting. That helped some, the burning cooled off. Still, it couldn’t take care of the worst of it because, lucky me, I’m allergic to bees. We ended up having to treat the sting for ten days at home.

First, I had to elevate the foot. It was swollen and sore and keeping it up helped. I also would soak it in warm water with Epsom salts dissolved in it. That was the best, especially when I felt the pins and needles feeling coming back. I am sure that both of these treatments helped a lot.

If you put the baking soda paste on the sting right away it can pull poison out. There are other ways to do that too. I’m not a fan of tobacco, but if you get a bee sting and put some damp tobacco on it, it can pull out some of the venom.

I still swear by baking soda though. It works for all sort of insect bites. Plus if you aren’t allergic, try camphorated oil. That works too. My grandparents used meat tenderizer to make the itching and irritation less severe.

None of these work on chigger bites though. Have you ever been bitten by chiggers? It’s so miserable, there is nothing like the itch of chigger bites! One of the only things that helps is prednisone.

One home remedy that can work is to paint each bite with some nail polish. I’ve been so miserable from chigger bites that I’ve grabbed the first bottle I could reach, but frankly I recommend a bottle of clear nail polish if you want to try this trick.

Even better, try to prevent bites from occurring. Or, at least discourage chiggers from biting you much. Some foods seem to make your sweat less attractive to chiggers. Ginger, marjoram, and cayenne are said to work for this purpose.
