Wii Controller Basics For The Uninitiated
Nintendo’s successful Wii video game console has many games that go with it. They operate by manipulating wireless remote controls. The Wii controller has several options. This article will discuss the types of controllers available and what they are used for.
The basic controller is a rectangular, hand-held remote. It comes with a built-in speaker, has an external connector for a Nunchuk (which we will discuss later in this article), Classic Controller connector and a rumble feature which causes the remote to vibrate at particular points in games or to alert a player that it is his or her turn. Basic controllers come in white, black, blue and pink. They are battery operated; a recharging port is available separately. Each Wii game console supports four Wii remote controllers.
The very first attachment to the basic remote was the Wii Nunchuk. The Nunchuk lets the characters move quickly. It is held in one hand and the basic remote is held in the other during game play. The Nunchuk plugs into the remote and does not require its own power. The four foot cord is long enough for easy movement. They are available for purchase in white or black.

The Wii Motion Plus controller entered the market in June 2009. It is an expansion device that fits onto the Wii remote controller, making the controller about 1.5″ longer. The Motion Plus makes complex moves possible and, according to Nintendo Magazine is “100% accurate.” It does not need to be removed from the remote control when playing most games. It comes in white, black, pink and aqua. Some of the games that this expansion device makes more fun include Legend of Zelda, Shaun White Snowboarding: World Stage and More, Grand Slam Tennis, Kids Sports – Crazy Mini Golf, Academy of Champions and James Cameron’s Avatar.
The Dance Dance Revolution controller is used with the Dance Dance Revolution game. As player match the steps on the television screen, the mat registers the steps. This is used in place of the remote.
The gun controller, called the Perfect Shot, is used with the gun in one hand and the Nunchuk in the other. Accuracy of the Perfect Shot is perfect, as the name implies. Most people prefer using the Perfect Shot remote instead of using the Zapper controller primarily because the Perfect Shot can be used with just one hand.
The Wii Zapper with Link’s Crossbow Training controller is simply a gun shell that holds both the Nunchuk and the main controller at the same time. It must be used with two hands. Nintendo created it to assist people with holding the remote and Nunchuk steady while playing shooting games.
For driving games, most people like using the Wii Wheel. The basic remote sits in the middle of the steering wheel horizontally. It makes driving games more fun to play.
All of these Wii remotes can be purchased separately. The primary remote is the Wii basic controller. Choosing and using the type of Wii controller that each individual game recommends will provide the best gaming experience to all serious players.
