Christian Funeral Service – Significance And Ceremony

For a devout Christian, a funeral service is a celebration of the soul’s journey into eternal life hereafter. Funeral services and rituals are uplifting, owing to the strong belief that the departed soul has at last found a permanent home in God’s abode.

Christianity considers death as a new beginning, wherein people are freed from the world of pain to the world of eternal bliss. That the deceased is enjoying heavenly bliss and is residing with God Himself is a relieving thought that lessens the severity of the shock that death brings to the family. The Christian funeral ceremonies are organized with these beliefs and feelings.

Generally, a pastor is the main officiator at a Christian funeral ceremony. The services are usually held at the very church that the deceased used to visit when he was alive. Though the service does not have a casket usually, but when it is being held inside a funeral home, casket is normally present. Usually, Christian funeral service does not have the custom of displaying the body of the dead person.

The funeral ceremony is organized in the memory of the departed, and it begins with singing of religious hymns and readings from the Holy Scriptures and the Bible. A brief message is given by the pastor, after which a mass prayer is held.

Then the assembled people partake in the grief of family members as well as close friends and tell about their personal experiences as to how the deceased has touched their lives and left an everlasting impression on their minds. Nowadays, people also put up a slide show on the life of the dead person or play a video recording taken from the deceased’s lifetime.

The last step in the service is that of a brief fellowship reception that is conducted in the church itself and some refreshments are served. A graveside service is normally not included, but some Christian communities have this as well.
