Funerals And The Ritual Of Letting Go

Death is an inevitable part of human existence. Death is part of the wheel of life. In each passing, there are those who die and there are those who mourn their loss. The role of the religion for those who are left behind is to perform a ritual of letting go. The funeral is the ritual that allows individuals to come to terms with their loved one’s demise.

Funerals across the world are characterized by a lot of traditions and rituals. It is at the funerals that the loved ones make peace with the fate and pray for the departed’s soul.

Church rules govern rites of funerals in Christian communities. However, as there are over 200 different communities of Christians, there are several differences in the manner in which the funeral services are conducted by each community.

The very first ritual in a Christian funeral that is organized before the actual service is held relates to gathering around the deceased for a night and reciting prayers for the departed soul. This important tradition is called wake. In present days, this is the time when relatives and close friends can pay their last respects to the deceased person. The body is properly preserved and kept either in a Church or at the house, and the time of visit is specified. In old times, the wake was followed by the ritual of absolution, which involved purgation of the deceased of all his or her sins in the present life, and laying a cross on the chest and performing the ritual of offertory where visitors put gifts in the casket.

Then begins the actual ceremony itself, where the dead is first carried to the Church in a hearse and prayers from the Holy Bible are said and hymns are sung in the church. Following this, the priest asks a family member or a friend to give a eulogy before the burial. Some communities have tolling of the bells as an integral part of the tradition that marks the end of service. When the funeral service is over, the casket with the deceased is carried to the burial site and burial service is held before the final burial.

Lastly, the family members organize a lunch for everyone who has attended the funeral. The primary aim of such rituals is to give support to the mourning family and assist them to overcome their grief and resign themselves to the fate.
