It is easy to remember that the anniversary celebrating twenty five years of marriage is the silver anniversary, & of course, the gift is silver. And it is just as easy to recall the the fiftieth anniversary is golden and gift givers holding true to tradition give gifts of gold. Can you recall the other wedding anniversary gifts by year?

Where are the roots of this tradition, and does it really matter if you adhere to it, or not? The actual percentage of people who find it important enough, to be sure to follow it, is probably quite low, in the twenty one hundreds, & within the USA, in particular. But, for those who continue to adhere to the protocol, there is a sense of pride as well as a personal feeling of satisfaction.

There is no telling, for sure, when this tradition started, but it was between several hundred years ago, and possibly more than a thousand years ago. History is sure of the location; Germany. The fourteenth wedding anniversary in the twenty first century is the opal anniversary. Year 15 is the year of crystal.

Do not ask why, but we count by 5s the rest of the way. Year 20 is china and year 25 is silver, while the 30th year bring pearls. We have another alternate in the name of caring about life on Earth. Coral has been replaced by jade for the 35th anniversary. Ruby is the 40th and number 45 belongs to the sapphire. We remember 50 as the golden year. 55 is for emeralds and 60 is for diamonds.
