Legacy Of Trophies
Trophy was actually taken from a Greek word. “Tropaion” was taken from the verb “trope,” meaning “to rout.” Trophies were considered symbols of victory in war battles back in ancient Greece. People used to make them on the fields of victorious battles, with the bases carved with the details of the fight and an inscription to the god they believed helped them win the battle.
In ancient Rome, trophies were exceedingly large and were often placed on pillars and arches. Instead of being an accolade to the victors and the gods on the battlefield, the Romans wanted them constructed in Rome.
No one knew much about its history during the Middle Ages. But it is believed that they were used as accolades for sporting events in the late 1600s. Silver chalices, as well as two-handled sterling cups, were the common shapes used during that period.

Trophies are perhaps the supreme mark of success. The bigger the trophy, the higher the achievement. They are everywhere, from the grandest of competitions, such as major sports competitions, to the humblest of matches, such as a Spelling Bee competition for elementary pupils.
Trophies now come in several types and sizes. Cups and chalices are still predominant in this day and age, but more and more forms are now being made, including stars, human forms, animal shapes, and abstract.
For mass production, materials used nowadays include steel, pewter, crystal, and plastic. They are a great deal less expensive and can be mass created.
Apart from sports, trophies are also given in acknowledgment of an individual or group accomplishment. Example is from the Hollywood major awards event The Academy Awards, where individual abilities (acting, directing, producing, etc.) and group efforts (film, cast, etc.) are acknowledged with a stylized human award.
A trophy symbolizes triumph and position, not only a prize for a specific achievement in sports, acting, discovery or other skills. Receiving one doesn’t just mean being able to outdo your adversaries in a game or being the recognized leader in your field of expertise. Being honored with a trophy means being part of the legacy that comes with it.
