Is A Wireless Security Alarm System The Right Choice For Your Home?
There isn’t any such thing as being too safe and secure in your home. Whether it’s your family which you’re concerned with protecting or just yourself, it’s important to be careful. There are many choices out there for home security systems, but it can sometimes be difficult to tell which of these perform as advertised. Many newer systems are wireless – but are these better than conventional security systems?
No one likes to think about being the victim of a crime, but crime does happen; which is why security companies continue to do quite well for themselves. As security systems for the home have become ever smaller and more powerful, it’s become easier to ensure home security by installing these monitors in inconspicuous locations. However, with wireless home security systems, there are both pros and cons.
Naturally, the advantage of a wireless home security system is that it’s impossible for an intruder to disable them by cutting the wires, a weakness of wired systems. When your security system can be made completely useless with a single cut wire, then it’s probably not such a great investment in the first place.

Unlike a wired security system, a wireless system can also call the security company to alert them of a problem if the wires have been cut or there is a problem with the phone lines. A wired system is of course completely reliant on wires to operate and cannot do this – and cannot be installed just about anywhere the owner wants, since the cables involved are a physical limitation on the places you can use the system.
These systems can easily be installed in locations which are difficult to see or to reach, making it much more difficult for a would-be intruder to disable. Of course, there are disadvantages to using wireless home security systems as well, such as battery life. Some models use AC power, in which case battery life isn’t an issue, but if your model uses batteries, then these must be changed periodically.
Signal strength may also be a problem – some of the lower end wireless security systems aren’t powerful enough to offer long range signals, especially if there are walls and other obstacles. Wireless signals may also be jammed with special equipment; while it’s not likely that a burglar will have these jammers handy, it is a possibility.
Electrical storms, snow storms, rain storms, and other forms of bad weather can interfere with the signal strength which means the unit might not function properly. In addition all wireless devices are affected by solar flares in some way shape or form. While these occurrences are rare this still means that there will be a time where your wireless security system might not be able to function properly. This means that your home will have a brief period of being unprotected.
While it would be nice to live without Home Security systems we have yet to do away with crime. If you have a family then having a security system is both a prudent and responsible decision. While no one wants to ever have to use the system it can still give peace of mind knowing that it’s there and will alert authorities if there is a break in.
