Reducing Energy Costs – Information & Advice For Businesses

Business nowadays is becoming a great deal more difficult with increased competition and expenses leading to narrower profit margins. For this reason it is important that a business reduces its running costs as much as is possible. One particular cost that can be reduced with informed planning and implementation is energy usage.

Reducing energy costs to optimum levels can mean the difference between solvency and insolvency. Energy rationalization is a concept that every business must adopt if they are going to succeed. Though it can be difficult to implement in some businesses, the advantages energy rationalization will bring will give your business the edge when it comes to profit margins.

Bearing all that in mind, what should your business be doing to decrease energy costs? Listed below are some areas that you should look at.

Lighting – As most people know, reducing energy costs through using more efficient lighting is one of the easiest ways you can save money. Utilizing such technology as compact fluorescent lamps and light emitting diodes, you can save on your monthly lighting bill by as much as 30%. What makes this such a great way to save money is the very short timeframe for getting a return on your investment, generally between one and a half to two years. Motion detectors can help in some circumstances as lights will be automatically shut-off when they are not needed.

Heating – Inefficient heating systems can suck huge amounts of money from your business, and poorly insulated buildings can effectively send your money into the atmosphere. Newer heating technology may seem expensive, but if you are sensible, it will pay for itself in relatively short time, plus you will increase your monthly working capital.

One way to reduce energy costs for heating and lighting is to try to utilize more natural sunlight into your premises. Using skylights and large windows will bring much more light into a room, meaning that less electricity is needed to power light bulbs. Increased sunlight will also bring increased warmth. Alternatively, if you are spending a large amount of money running air-conditioning units, look for ways to reduce the amount of work that the air-conditioning unit needs to do. Using tinted or light reflecting film on windows; or double or even triple glazing will decrease the amount of heat transferred through the window.

Using improved technology and therefore more energy efficient appliances is key, even though it may seem a large initial expense, over time energy costs will be reduced.
