Pizza pies consist of oven baked flat dough that is topped off with cheese, tomato sauce, and an array of vegetables and meats. Even though the dish came from Greece, pizza spread quickly to many other cultures and is one of the world’s most popular foods. Several types of pizza in America can be found, depending mostly on the region that you are in. Chicagoans and New Yorkers have, for generations, been fighting over who has the better pizza. For Canadians however, Panzerotto Pizza, a family run establishment is clearly a favorite. After finding out the brief history of the Panzerotto Pizza shop, it’s very easy to see why it is so popular.
Panzerotto pizza is referred to sometimes as small doughier calzones. Tomatoes and mozzarella cheese are popular ingredients in them but they can be stuffed with onions, sausages, and pepperoni. The dish originated in the late 40′s in Italy but is popular in several major Canadian cities also.
The chain originated with its first downtown Toronto location in 1976. The establishment, which was located on Yonge St., was operated and owned by a man named Alex Schiavone. Alex began his cooking experience in the early 50′s as a beloved gourmet chef.

He opened an Ontario Italian restaurant in 1969 and then spent a few years further honing his cooking skills. During this time, Alex began putting Panzerotto styled pizza on his menu. The recipe for Panzerotto pizza is a type of calzone native to a small Italian village.
The new dish quickly became an instant hit with the Ontario customers and they began to demand the pizza in large quantities. It was so popular, in fact, that Mr. Schiavone decided to to sell his Italian restaurant and open up one that would predominantly sell the new dish in Toronto.
Due to the style being unknown, the Panzerotto dish’s sales were slow at first. However, it’s supporters were eventually able to spread news of the tasty treat across Toronto and it won over most of its detractors. In 1980, Alex decided that he wanted to take full advantage of the success of his business. He began attracting some investors and, through franchises, began expanding his company.
The Panzerotto Pizza company has been going strong ever since and Alex and his immediate family have remained very involved in its operations. There are currently thirty five Panzerottos operating across Canada and the Northern United States. And Alex and his sons Frank, Joe, and Vito have over seventy five years of combined experience between them and are integral parts of the day to day operations of both the Head Office and the various store locations.
As of April 1995, the company was the first to provide city wide pizza delivery via the internet. Interested users were able to visit the restaurant’s website and custom order their favorite meals. Through the use of technology that was extremely modern and high tech at the time, orders were routed directly to call centers and then processed for delivery. The beloved pizza chain, not content to stop there, is still constantly evaluating and upgrading their customer service skills.
