How to Build a Retention Pond for Water Drainage
In Houston, building has been a major part of the changing terrain simply because there is so much building going on in the metroplex. With so much building, a lot of the water from rain has caused a lot of flooding so commercial contractors in Houston are called to build retention ponds to allow water drain off, stop the flooding and add to the aesthetic development of the city.
Dan Lowry shares some of the most important aspects when planning a retention pond.
To build a retention pond, it is important to find the lowest part of the property. This allows the best possible result for the land to create the gravity to pull the water to the right place.

The first stage is to build the pond, and to build the side draining ditches to be built last. This will keep the area dry while working on the retention pond.
The backhoe is used next to remove the land in the center of the pond. The dirt should be moved around the perimeters of the pond, or the outside edges. This will create the banks of the pond. Most ponds are at least 15-20 feet in depth so depending on how much rain water drain off is needed, this should be a starting point.
The rain will also need a place to drain off if the pond gets flooded. These would need to go to a river or stream but in a large city like Houston, the local bayou or lake will suffice.
Once the permit is aquired there should be no problems with building your pond. This can be done as an independent contractor or done with no problems with the commercial builder, as they are familiar with where and when to get them on a regular basis.
Most importantly, to retain the pond and create a base on the floor of the pond, about 12 inches of clay should be used. This will seal in the water and maintain the pond for years to come.
Lastly, in some areas, the feeder ditches will need to be dug in the final stages to hold the run off water if the rainwater creates.
Lowry Commercial Builder’s claim it’s not hard to plan and build a retention pond but it is good to know what you are doing so that it will last indefinitely and add aesthetic pleasure for years to come.
