What Is Photoshop?

Adobe Photoshop is published by Adobe Systems, Inc. It’s a graphics editing program that was originally developed in 1987 by Thomas Knoll. At the time, Knoll was in the Ph.D. program at the University of Michigan. His original intent was to utilise his monochrome display to show greyscale images. This first program was called Display.

His brother, John Knoll, was an Industrial Light Magic employee; he told Thomas he should turn it into an image editing program. Thomas and his brother collaborated on the program for the next six months, which led to the second incarnation of what was to be Photoshop, Image Pro. It was renamed Photoshop later that year, and today, Photoshop is arguably the most comprehensive image editing software available anywhere. The program itself is so complicated, in fact, that many people find it helpful to take an Adobe Photoshop course to help them learn the program. Many business training courses, as well, also include training for Adobe Photoshop. Today, you can use Adobe Photoshop for the Internet, print applications, and new media as well. Millions of people all over the world use it, including professionals and “regular folks”.

It’s so ubiquitous; in fact, that just about any image you see these days has probably been enhanced or altered in some way by the use of Photoshop.

How Photoshop works

The program itself has a pretty extensive help file, but any Adobe Photoshop course will teach you how to use it properly. The basic program includes the workspace, which is where you work on creating and editing visual documents as appropriate. The workspace itself contains the application bar, the tools panel, the options bar, the panel, and the document window. Adobe has made things easier by making the workspace very similar to those of other Adobe programs, so that if you’ve worked with Adobe programs before, you’ll be able to find your way around it quite easily. Again, if you find yourself with questions, not to worry; the program is pretty complicated such that even professionals are continually discovering new things about it every day. Taking an Adobe Photoshop course will help you learn your way around it quite easily.

The program itself contains tools of various types (such as brush, pencil, filters, and more) so that you can enhance and “play with” images, changing their appearance by adding drop shadows, brightening, adding various filters, and more.

Playing with Adobe Photoshop

One of the best ways to learn Adobe Photoshop is simply to play with it and see what you can do with it. Again, the interface is quite intuitive, so that you can simply play with different types of tools and see what you can do with images you upload into the program. (It’s a good idea to save an original copy as “filename-orig” or something similar so that you don’t mess up any work you’ve already done while you play with this and experiment with different changes.)
