Why Would a Forklift Attachment be Needed?

Maybe it is because of its name, but in the minds of many forklift buyers, it is just a single purpose vehicle: a vehicle that has a mast and two forks mounted on the front for the purpose of lifting heavy objects. They often don’t realize that a forklift attachment can completely change and expand its usefulness in the workplace.

It’s hard to say exactly why the misunderstanding exists, but it’s worth it to know that there is much more to a forklift than the names implies. With the right forklift attachment, its functionality is greatly expanded. It becomes, instead of just two stiff parallel arms, a pair of hands and arms with tremendous dexterity and strength. Just what can these attachments do?

For starters, there are so many of these attachments that they cannot all adequately be described in a few words. Even trying to categorize them all would be difficult. Some of them are very simple in design and construction and just expand the efficiency of the existing forks, while others can deftly manipulate and move heavy objects.

The standard forks are capable of handling hundreds of tasks well and can be used adequately for many other jobs, but there are some jobs they cannot be used for at all. In this case, the need for a more specialized forklift attachment arises. In some cases, all that is needed is a simple sleeve-like device that fits onto the standard forks. In other cases, it must be another type of machine or equipment that is fitted onto the forks or replaces the forks.

Some different types of forklift sleeves are extensions, rounded and polyurethane fork covers. The extensions are normally either 5 or 6 feet in length are their only purpose is to give the forks extra length when it is needed. The round top extensions carry delicate or large objects safely and securely between the forks. Polyurethane sleeves are made to act as a buffer or cushion between the steel forks and more malleable materials they may be carrying.

The drum handler is an example of a highly engineered forklift attachment. These may be more or less complex in structure, depending on their features, but they all are designed to do a similar job: lift full drums, rotate the drums either sideways or forward, empty all or part of the drums and return the drums to their upright position. Some are fairly simple and are made to be manually rotated, while others are electronically controlled.

The block handler is yet another type of handler. As the name implies, it is designed to lift square blocks, usually with a scissoring action. For an attachment that is designed to carry weights up to thousands of pounds, it can have a delicate touch.

This small list of examples is only meant to demonstrate how many uses a forklift can be put to if it has the right forklift attachment. There are dozens of others, including safety attachments, hoists, containers and personnel lifts, to name a few.
