OTC Asthma Medication

Living with asthma is never an easy thing because not being able to breathe properly can lead to serious complications. The symptoms of asthma, an inflammatory chronic disease, include bronchial spasms, coughing, shortness of breath, wheezing, and tightness in the chest. The condition occurs as a result of factors such as what is around a person, and heredity, as when a allergy attack occurs. Lots of different kinds of asthma medicines and treatments can be purchased.

Medications for asthma are vital for the management of your condition. If you are asthmatic and prone to having attacks, you should keep your medication with you at all times. Choosing the proper medicine is important in avoiding asthma attacks so you will be able to fully live your life. The aim and focus of asthma treatments are controlling the inflammation of the airways and preventing the chronic symptoms that are associated with asthma such as shortness of breath and coughing, as well as easing the asthma attacks when they happen.

Generally, there are two kinds of asthma medications. These can be divided into: quick-relief medications which are used to treat acute symptoms and long-term control medications that are used to prevent the onset and worsening of asthma attacks.

Salbutamol is the first treatment option in treating asthma. Used with Salbutamol, anticholinergic medications can also treat moderate and severe asthma symptoms. This medication is given those who are allergic to Salbutamol and other similar medicines. On the other hand, Adrenergic antagonists, such as inhaled epinephrine are sometimes used and have the same effects as Salbutamol but few physicians recommend this medication because it causes over-stimulation of the heart.

Glucocorticoids and Corticosteroids are the most efficacious remedies for Asthma. These medications are taken using metered-dose inhalers. They work by reducing the swelling and tightening of the airways. One alternative to glucocorticoids are mast cell stabilizers. Glucocorticoids are traditionally used for treatment, however, leukotriene modifiers are a valid alternative. These medicines prevent the action of leukotrienes which can cause asthma symptoms. They will forestall symptoms for as long as a day.

Most medicines used to treat asthma are available as metered-dose inhalers, usually combined with an asthma spacer. A list of medications can be found as a dry powder inhaler.

In emergencies, there are other options if the person’s asthma doesn’t clear with the medications. For example, oxygen is used to ease hypoxia; while intravenous salbutamol is only used in extreme cases. For severe asthma attacks, bronchodilating effects can be obtained by intravenous administration of magnesium sulfate. Another use of Heliox gas, which is a mixture of helium and oxygen is asthma attacks of unresponsive nature.

Consult your doctor first before trying any asthma medication. Your doctor will be the one that knows what medication will work best for treating your asthma problems, and how often it should be used. In order to figure out if you should alter your medication or up the dosage, regular appointments with your doctor are recommended.
