Now I Know What’s Wrong – Auto Finance Software Critique

I’ve been using it for a couple of months now and everything seems to be going smoothly. I really like having the transaction tracking and budget tracking in the same software instead of managing it in 2 different places. But, this product seems like an early release. Even for budgeting, I find it incomplete.

The holy grail of the YNAB method is what the company refers to as the “YNAB buffer”, which simply means spending last month’s income this month (in perpetuity). Doing this makes planning and budgeting much simpler, not to mention drastically reducing the financial stresses of life, and the program itself can actually help you get there. YNAB allows you to account for all your annual bills in 1/12 increments and then when they roll around the money is there to pay for them. The heart of the YNAB system is a “buffer” which is comprised of last month’s paychecks in order to allow you to save this month’s paychecks. I’m old, so it was confusing at first to figure out the program, but it works. Bottom line, you won’t make any more money per payday, but you won’t waste your money, and still “have it all,” plus allot more left over. And to make the software work, you have to understand and use the “YNAB Way.” This is the first piece of software that I’ve used that I feel has actually helped me get a budget that helped me plan for the future rather than simply report on the past. They are too complex and just don’t provide the “in your face” numbers that YNAB Pro does. The forum community on his website is also pretty active and questions are answered pretty immediately. Reading through all of the reviews that have been rated below 5, it seems to me that some of those people purchasing the software may not have a clear picture of what it does, and does not do. I have always had a very hard time managing finances, and have never been able to handle a budget well at all.

The success of YNAB is in its approach (the 4 rules, which are key to its success) and the customer service (which is pretty much unrivaled in my experience). And there’s a pretty fabulous forum community as well (shout out to all my fellow YNAB users).

Been using YNAB for years, I don’t follow all the rules but it is still great for tracking expenses, credit cards, checking accounts, and just knowing what you’re doing with your money. Will never go back to quicken junk again.

It is fantastic software. After years of living in and out of credit I finally got the help I needed.

This software is great in managing/budgeting your expenses. The only bad thing is the amount of work that you have to put in (recording).

As someone who has not budgeted before, I find this software great for showing me where my money really goes, but I don’t find it intuitive to use. It shows nifty bar and pie graphs of my expenditures by month – I find the budgeting portion of the software confusing and not intuitive. The budget now is almost a living thing as I can download transactions every couple of days and begin preparing for next month’s budget as I’m paid and pay off this month’s bills. It does take some getting used to, but I don’t see much way around this.

If I wanted something I bought it. I worried about paying for it later.
